I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend in the snow! We are now into the 3rd quarter, with many exciting things on the way. The third quarter will start with the Gesu Teacher and Staff Pancake Breakfast to kick off Catholic Schools Week, “Faith. Academics. Service.” Please join us on Sunday, January 29th beginning at 9:30 A.M. in the Sullivan Center. Pancakes, sausage and more will be provided for breakfast. The cost is $5 per person and $15 per family. We hope to see the entire Gesu community there!!! Some other highlights of the third quarter include: Science Fair, Confirmation, Right to Read Week, and Open House. As I mentioned last week our biggest recruiter for Open House is our Gesu families, so continue to talk to your friends, colleagues, and neighbors about all Gesu has to offer academically and spiritually.
I also want to remind everyone to nominate a Gesu Teacher for the Golden Apple Award. I was honored to be a recipient last year, and with so many excellent teachers here at Gesu, I know we can have another recipient this year. Between now and February 3rd please submit your nomination, along with a letter of recommendation explaining why the Gesu teacher should win the Golden Apple Award, in the letter give specific qualities that make this teacher outstanding and deserving of this wonderful award. All nominations need to be submitted to the principal by Friday, February 3rd. If you have any questions please visit www.toledodiocese.org or feel free to stop by Gesu. Please take the time to nominate one for their work in your child’s education.

What a great way to end the week with a Winter Sports Pep Rally. It certainly felt and looked like winter outside, and the Gesu students were full of energy to show support for our basketball teams and our Covenant award winners. The highlight of the pep rally was the surprise appearance by our Gesu mascot. I would like to thank boosters and PTO for supporting the mascot, as well as Gesu parent Kathy Dowd who helped put together the Gesu mascot. We now need to find a name for the mascot! Students are going to be submitting names this week, and next week we will take the top three names and post them on the Gesu website to have everyone vote. The mascot name will be announced at the pancake breakfast on Sunday, January 29th.
Please join us for the Gesu teacher and staff pancake breakfast on Sunday, January 29th beginning at 9:30 A.M. in the Sullivan Center. Pancakes, sausage and more will be provided for breakfast. The cost is $5 per person and $15 per family. We hope to see the entire Gesu community there!!!

This foundation has been expanded from the Diocese of Pittsburgh to include the Diocese of Toledo. Please drop off your response or e-mail it to me by Friday, January 20th. Please be sure to attach your name to the response.
I would also like to thank everyone who supported the teacher bake sales that we held in November and December to help raise money for an ad for Open House. We will have an ad in the February edition of Toledo Parent Magazine. Please continue to help by spreading the word about Open House. I believe we are going to have a huge turnout of new students and families that would like to join the Gesu community. However, regardless of commercials or newspaper ads, our biggest recruiter is our Gesu families, so continue to talk to your friends, colleagues, and neighbors about all Gesu has to offer academically and spiritually.
Thursday, January 19th marks the end of the 2nd quarter. Grade cards will be sent home on Tuesday, January 31st. Hot lunch orders are also due this Thursday.

Principal Newsletter/Blog: January 9, 2012!
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful time with family and friends during Christmas vacation. We are now coming up on the middle of the school year, and as we go through January and February, I want to remind you about closings and or delays for the school year. If Gesu is ever on a two hour delay or closed you will see the scroll on the bottom of a local TV station say “Toledo Catholic Elementary Schools”. Hopefully, this mild winter continues…spring is not too far away!
I would like to remind all parents that we are still looking for volunteers to help at lunch and recess. Parents who volunteer at recess during the months of January and February will earn double service hours. In regards to recess, I have been stressing with the students it is a time to have fun and get some exercise. However, it is not going to be total chaos while outside. I have been reviewing rules and procedures with students and reminding them that any student who does not follow the rules at recess will not be outside with us.
Every Monday, the students of Gesu have been reciting the Gesu Covenant. I have been in the classrooms discussing with the students what this Covenant means. We also established a parent Covenant this year. These Covenants are meant as a reminder that is a privilege to attend Gesu, we are more than a school where you receive a great education. We are a school that promotes our Catholic values, and helps everyone to discover the gifts they possess. With that said, I am pleased to announce the students who were selected by their classmates as students who have been demonstrating the Gesu Covenant. These students will have their pictures taken to be displayed near the main entrance, along with receiving a “WE ARE GESU” wrist band, and have lunch with the principal. Congratulations to the following greyhounds: KB: Madelyn McKelvy and Will Kapzukiewicz, KN: Megan Sturgeon and Nahano Lunfungulo, 1S: Katie Bissell, 2M: Eric Bossenbroek, 2S: Emma Kapzukiewicz, 3D: Jamie Young, 3H: Kathryn Polizzi, 4R: Brooke Hoffman, 4K: Maria Fizer, 5M: Shelbei Walker, 5R: Julia Loeb, 6R: Mary Gerhardinger, 6S: Bridget Siebenaller, 7rt: Kayla Miller, 7r2: Jarrett Trendel and Mahogany Jackson, 8A: Joe Durham, and 8P: Charlie McCartney.
As we get closer to Open House, I along with the teachers and staff are working on some ideas and I have a favor to ask of the Gesu parents. I am looking for quotes or a short answer to the following question, “Why do I send my child or children to Gesu?” Anyone who submits a response in writing or e-mail, will be entered into a drawing to receive a free hot lunch slip. Please drop off your response or e-mail it to me by Friday, January 20th, please be sure to attach your name to the response.
Over the last month students in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades participated in the school Geography Bee. Last week, the classroom winners participated to have a chance to represent Gesu in the state Geography Bee. I would like to congratulate the following students who represented their classes in the school competition: 5th graders: Matthew Nelson and Ian Black, 6th graders: Cole Grisier and Timothy Organ, 7th graders: Patrick Smyth and Will Moore, and 8th graders: Maddie Smith and Charlie McCartney. I would like to congratulate Patrick Smyth who won the school geography bee and will have a chance to compete in the Ohio Geography Bee. I would like to thank PTO for sponsoring the Geography Bee here at Gesu.
Attention, attention, the first edition of the Gesu School Newspaper, Paw Print, is out!! I want to thank all of the parents and middle school students who have worked on the newspaper. Anyone who wants to read the first edition will find the link on the school website. The middle school students are already busy working on the 2nd edition.

As we prepare to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, I want everyone to remember something he once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” Remember life is not just about oneself, it is about planning service to help impact the lives of people in your community. Life is about working with others to solve problems that are impacting people in our world.
Finally, I just want to thank all of the families for their continued support of Gesu. We have come a long way these past few months and still have work to do for Gesu’s continued growth. The next few months are exciting as we get closer to Open House and the registration period for next school year. As I have mentioned over and over since I took this position, the future of Gesu is bright!
